Spreadsheet Programs

There are several popular options for spreadsheet programs. Choose from one of the following based on your computer and Internet access.

1. Microsoft Office's Excel

Use Microsoft Office's Excel program. This is most commonly used by businesses who buy a license for all of the computers in their office. It is user friendly and there is a large amount of helpful advice for its use available on the Internet.

2. Apache Open Office

Download Apache Open Office. This is the open source spreadsheet program based in many ways on Microsoft Excel. Many of the Excel tutorials can help you use Open Office Calc. The program is free for personal use.

3. Google Docs/Drive Spreadsheet

Use Google Docs/Drive spreadsheet program. If you want cloud access to your spreadsheet or multiple users who can edit, then this is the best choice. This is a free service associated with your Google account. Go to Google.com/Drive

4. Apple's iWork

Use Apple's iWork program. The spreadsheet program is called "Numbers." It may not be as powerful of a program as other spreadsheets, but it will work for most people who are using them for personal use.

    1. Spreadsheet is a file made of rows and columns that help sort data, arrange data easily, and calculate numerical data. It has the ability to calculate values using mathematical formulas and the data in cells. A good example of how a spreadsheet may be used is creating an overview of your bank's balance.

Below are some other popular uses of spreadsheets.
      Finance
Spreadsheets are great at any financial data, such as your checking account information, budgets, transactions, billing, invoices, receipts, forecasts, and any payment system.

      Forms
Form templates can be created to handle inventory, evaluations, performance reviews, quizzes, time sheets, patient information, and surveys.

      School and Grades
Teachers can use spreadsheets to track students, calculate grades, and identify important data, such as high and low scores, missing tests, and students who are struggling.

      Lists
Managing a list in a spreadsheet is a great example of data that does not contain numbers, but still can be used in a spreadsheet. Great examples of spreadsheet lists include telephone, to-do, and grocery lists.

      Sports
Spreadsheets can keep track of your favorite player stats or stats on the whole team. With the collected data, you can also find averages, high scores, and other statistical data. Spreadsheets can even be used to create tournament brackets.

  2. Hello ma'am. What is the difference of using spreadsheet on using Microsoft Word? In MS word we can also create table with numbers.

    1. Spreadsheet program is more efficient than the MS Word. In spreadsheet you can calculate bigger numbers and it includes formula tab that helps you for calculations.

Besides performing basic arithmetic and mathematical functions, modern spreadsheets provide built-in functions for common financial and statistical operations. Such calculations as net present value or standard deviation can be applied to tabular data with a pre-programmed function in a formula. Spreadsheet programs also provide conditional expressions, functions to convert between text and numbers, and functions that operate on strings of text.

In MS word you can create table with numbers but you cannot calculate a bigger numbers and it difficult to edit so it is preferable to use spreadsheet program.

    1. Hello Mylene, we can convince other teachers to used spreadsheet by simply introducing it to them. Introduce to them that it is more easy to used spreadsheet that manual computing. It will help to make the computing faster and accurate because of the formula that is included to the program and it is easy to learn how to used it.

  6. I am working with Microsoft Excel 2010, I want to protect my worksheet without locking all the cells. I only want to protect some of the cells, not all of them. Is that even possible? How can I do that?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, you can lock a cell lock the cell you want in excel. These are the steps in locking cell in excel 2010:

      1. Click the Protect Sheet command button in the Changes group on the Review tab.

Excel opens the Protect Sheet dialog box, where you select the options you want to be available when the worksheet protection is enabled. By default, Excel selects the Protect Worksheet and Contents of Locked Cells check box.

      2. (Optional) Select any of the check boxes in the Allow All Users of This Worksheet To list box (such as Format Cells or Insert Columns) that you still want to be functional when the worksheet protection is operational.

The Select Locked Cells and Select Unlocked Cells check boxes are selected by default, but you can deselect either or both of these options if you prefer.

      3. If you want to assign a password that must be supplied before you can remove the protection from the worksheet, type the password in the Password to Unprotect Sheet text box.

      4. Click OK.

If you typed a password in Step 3, Excel opens the Confirm Password dialog box. Re-enter the password exactly as you typed it previously and then click OK. Notice that if you try to edit a cell, Excel displays an error message.

    1. There are a lot of spreadsheet you can use without internet.
      This are the list:

Ability Office Spreadsheet – for MS Windows.

Accel Spreadsheet – included with Ex-Lex Office Pro and many others from SSuite Software. Licensed as freeware.

Apple iWork Numbers, included with Apple's iWork '08 suite exclusively for Mac OS X v10.4 or higher.

AppleWorks – for MS Windows and Macintosh. This is a further development of the historical Claris Works Office suite.

WordPerfect Office Quattro Pro – for MS Windows. Was one of the big three spreadsheets (the others being Lotus 123 and Excel).

EasyOffice EasySpreadsheet – for MS Windows. No longer freeware, this suite aims to be more user friendly than competitors.

Framework – for MS Windows. Historical office suite still available and supported. It includes a spreadsheet.

IBM Lotus Symphony – freeware for MS Windows, Apple Mac OS X and GNU/Linux.

Kingsoft Office Spreadsheets 2012 – For MS Windows. Both free and paid versions are available. It can handle Microsoft Excel .xls and .xlsx files, and also produce other file formats such as .et, .txt, .csv, .pdf, and .dbf. It supports multiple tabs, VBA macro and PDF converting.

Lotus SmartSuite Lotus 123 – for MS Windows. In its MS-DOS (character cell) version, widely considered to be responsible for the explosion of popularity of spreadsheets during the 80s and early 90s.

MarinerPak Mariner Calc – for Apple Macintosh. Full featured and light weight.

Microsoft Office Excel – for MS Windows and Apple Macintosh. The proprietary spreadsheet leader.

Microsoft Works Spreadsheet – for MS Windows (previously MS-DOS and Apple Macintosh). Only allows one sheet at a time.

PlanMaker – for MS Windows, GNU/Linux, MS Windows Mobile and CE; part of SoftMaker Office

Quattro Pro – part of WordPerfect Office

StarOffice Calc – Cross-platform. StarOffice was originally developed by the German company Star Division which was purchased by Sun in 1998. The code was made open source and became OpenOffice.org. Sun continues developing the commercial version which periodically integrates the open source code with their own and third party code to make new low price versions

I prefer Microsoft Excel because it is the common spreadsheet used in our generation.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The purpose of a spreadsheet is it can store a small or large set of data within a system of cells, organized into rows and columns. A cell can contain a data value, or a calculation, such as sums or percentages. This means that within a spreadsheet, you may find multiple data values as well as various types of calculation on those values. Basic calculations such as sums and percentages are common, but spreadsheets are capable of significant mathematical complexity. For example, a statistical spreadsheet could calculate standard deviation, establishing the extent to which the values in a data set vary above or below the average. Spreadsheets can also process and manipulate data, with sorting and filtering among the most common tasks.

  11. Is spreadsheet is important in the field of business?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Using a spreadsheet allows a business to keep records of vast information in a single, organized location. A spreadsheet can easily make various calculations simultaneously, aiding in the analysis of its numerical data. This allows businesses to record their accountancy flow and create forecasts to achieve their targets.

Statistical information such as income, spending, overhead costs and stock flow can all be recorded using a simple spreadsheet software package. A spreadsheet is relatively simple to use and can turn information into complex charts and graphs. The forecasts created in a spreadsheet can also assist in decision-making within any business.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Spreadsheet programs are in widespread use in classrooms at all levels of education. Teachers use them primarily to keep budgets and gradebooks and to help teach mathematical topics. They offer teachers and students several kinds of unique benefits.

Save time — Spreadsheets save valuable time by allowing teachers and students to complete essential calculations quickly. They save time not only by making initial calculations faster and more accurate, but their automatic recalculation features also make it easy to update products such as grades and budgets. Entries also can be changed, added, or deleted easily, with formulas that automatically recalculate final grades.

Organize displays of information — Although spreadsheet programs are intended for numerical data, their capability to store information in columns makes them ideal tools for designing informational charts such as schedules and attendance lists that may contain few numbers and no calculations at all.

Support asking "what if" questions — Spreadsheets help people visualize the impact of changes in numbers. Since values are automatically recalculated when changes are made in a worksheet, a user can play with numbers and immediately see the result. This capability makes it feasible to pose "what if" questions and to answer them quickly and easily.

Increase motivation to work with mathematics — Many teachers feel that spreadsheets make working with numbers more fun. Students sometimes perceive mathematical concepts as dry and boring; spreadsheets can make these concepts so graphic that students express real delight with seeing how they work.

  21. How about spreadsheet program for Android phones?

    ReplyDelete

    1. There are a lot of spreadsheet program for android phone that you can downloaded but I listed five common downloaded spreadsheet program:

      1. Google Sheets
Given that we’re talking about Android devices, one would probably expect Google Sheets to be the best available app of all choices — and it’s true, Google Sheets is pretty darn good. It’s fast, it’s packed with features, it’s free, and it looks good.

      2. Microsoft Excel
Microsoft has made a real turnaround over the past few years, making uncharacteristic decisions like open sourcing the .NET Framework and making OneNote completely free. But in 2015 they released Office for Android, and it blew us away. Android is a Google platform, but you can read our take on how Microsoft took over our Android devices. Long story short: the entire workflow is clean, simple, intuitive, and a breath of fresh air.

      3. WPS Office
One would think that either Google or Microsoft holds the crown for #1 most downloaded office app on Android, but here’s the weird thing: that title belongs to WPS Office, which has close to 100 million active installs. This app is 100% free without any ads or in-app purchases, which is great enough on its own, but what’s truly impressive is that WPS Office has the quality of premium software. It’s fast, it looks great, it’s easy to learn, and everything just works

      4. Polaris Office
Polaris Office is an awesome suite of tools that works well as a wholesale replacement for all of the office apps offered by Google and Microsoft. It might be too much for some folks, but for frequent on-the-go workers, it’s perfect.
Not only can it create, open, and edit any Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, but it also has support for 300+ formulas, 20+ chart types, and all kinds of filters, templates, and drawing shapes.

      5. OfficeSuite
Like the two other above, OfficeSuite is a collection of office-related apps, so if you’re just looking for a standalone spreadsheet handler, then this will probably deliver more than you’re asking for.

  22. What is the difference between a spreadsheet and a database?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Spreadsheets and databases are often used in tandem. A person can build a database to store a variety of types of information such as names, addresses, identification numbers and salary information. A spreadsheet is used to present chunks of information found in a database. Information in a database can be presented in the best format that makes creating the spreadsheet easier, since including vast amounts of information on one spreadsheet can make a spreadsheet difficult to navigate and read. Some examples of database software are Oracle, FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, SAP and MySQL. Using the software, a person can enter all the information needed to create a spreadsheet at a later time. Once the information is entered into the database, a command called a query is used to generate the information.

This is summarized the differences between the two:

1.A spreadsheet is an application for tabulating data while a database is where data is stored so that it can be retrieved by users

2.The amount of data that is usually stored in a database is way more than what is contained in a spreadsheet

3.A spreadsheet is edited directly by people while a database is accessed by applications that enter and modify data

4.A spreadsheet is usually used for presentations and paperworks while databases are commonly used in cases where a lot of data needs to stored

    Replies
    1. Yes, they are all the same, but there is always an area where the two can shine and here's the list:

      Where Google Sheets shine:
*Collaboration: As others mentioned, collaboration is where Google really shines. It's incredibly easy for multiple people to work on a spreadsheet simultaneously, and this makes for a powerful project management use case. I've tracked multiple project plans with 10+ (sometimes 30!) people making edits at the same time.

*Cloud Storage: Underrated feature when people typically make this comparison, but I've found huge value to be able to start work on a desktop computer, continue working on it in a laptop, and even make changes on mobile. This works seamlessly.

*Version Control: Have you seen files named like "Analysis v12.3 LX [final][present ready] 20141208.xlsx"? Yeah, doesn't happen in Sheets, but you still get the document history backed up to virtually every change you made in the same document.

*Apps Script: People typically laud VBA as something that makes Excel very powerful. Unbeknownst to most, Google Apps Scripts does that as well, and it's an exceptionally powerful tool, based in Javascript. You can easily run scripts, and connect to APIs and such with some work. It's so much easier to connect to other resources on the web.

      Where Excel shines:
*Raw Processing Power: Excel is uses memory more efficiently as a native app (on Windows) and is much more responsive. If you are analyzing 10,000+ rows of data, I'd say it's a no-brainer to use Excel. That said, if you are managing very large data sets (300,000+ rows), I'd urge you to consider a real data analysis tool (SQL, Matlab, etc.) instead. Even Excel stalls (trust me, I've had Excel running on 4 cores overnight).

*Chart Formatting: Excel (2013 at least, but I'd say 2010 and 2007 as well) offers extensive options for formatting charts that Sheets simply cannot do. Changing axis names, formatting data values, etc. - they matter when you are presenting to executive audiences. This extends somewhat to formatting in general.

*Exploratory Analysis: This is my go-to use case of Excel. Excel has much more built out pivot table, filtering, conditional formatting, and other data visualization tools. When I see a data set for the first time, I always open it in Excel to have a better understanding of its structure.

*China: If you want to deliver something to China, you simply cannot use Google Apps since it's blocked!

  29. What are disadvantage of Spreadsheet?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not a Database

Spreadsheets have a row-and-column format very similar to a table in a database, but they are not suited to storing large amounts of information or managing it as effectively as a database. You can easily set up a spreadsheet to organize simple customer lists, inventory and other data tables. Though handy for up to a few hundred items, a spreadsheet becomes cumbersome for thousands or more. Databases not only accommodate nearly any number records, but also they connect individual data sets into more useful combinations.

      No Audit Trail

Audit trails are an important means of preserving the integrity of data; however, a spreadsheet program does not have audit trails for data or formulas. It simply updates the file with new information. Although several people may have had a hand in creating a spreadsheet, you cannot identify who worked on specific parts just by looking at it. The file has a modify date, but doesn't tell you the history of specific items within the spreadsheet.

      GIGO

Decades ago, computer specialists adopted the phrase, "Garbage In, Garbage Out," because the machines executed every program faithfully whether it was well-written or not. The notion applies to spreadsheets as well, as they are a form of computer programming. A finished spreadsheet may appear attractive and convincing but can be riddled with errors. Spreadsheet users must take care to check their formulas and use data from appropriate sources.

      Learning Curve

It takes mathematical aptitude and careful work to create a good spreadsheet. A clerk may be comfortable entering numbers into a spreadsheet file, but he may not have the ability to develop formulas or macros. Beneath the simplicity of the spreadsheet's layout lies a complex set of rules that some users may find intimidating. Those not already exposed to programming concepts such as functions face a stiff learning curve before they develop competence with developing their own spreadsheets.
